AUDEMARS PIGUET Genève

Ultra-Thin 18K Yellow Gold Dress wristwatch, Circa 1954

An exceptionally refined vintage Audemars Piguet Ultra Thin watch, created during one of the most elegant periods of post-war Swiss watchmaking and preserved in remarkably authentic condition.
Dating to approximately 1954, this understated dress watch embodies the classical Audemars Piguet aesthetic of the period: exceptional thinness, pure proportions, precious materials and a beautifully finished mechanical movement, all executed without unnecessary ornamentation.
The Audemars Piguet Ultra Thin Watch is housed in an extraordinarily slim 18K yellow gold case, hallmarked 18K / 0.750, measuring approximately 32 mm in diameter and only 4.5 mm in overall thickness. Its gently angled bezel, elongated straight lugs and exceptionally low profile give the watch an elegant architectural presence on the wrist.
The silvered dial is signed “Audemars, Piguet Genève” and features a beautifully restrained layout with fine black baton indexes, a distinctive triple index at 12 o’clock and slender gold-tone hands.
Particularly important from a collector’s perspective, the watch retains its original, unrestored dial, with the naturally developed patina that only decades of age can produce. The silvered surface shows characteristic peripheral spotting, toning and age-related marks around the outer edge of the dial. Rather than detracting from the watch, these traces give it the unmistakable presence of a genuinely preserved vintage timepiece and clearly distinguish it from examples whose dials have been refinished or cosmetically renewed.
The watch is powered by a finely finished 17-jewel Audemars Piguet manual-winding movement, numbered 61260 and marked “Adjusted to Temperature and Four Positions,” indicating that the movement was individually regulated to maintain greater consistency across changes in temperature and different wearing positions — a testament to the high level of watchmaking associated with Audemars Piguet during this period.
The movement number places the watch within the early-to-mid 1950s, approximately circa 1954. Audemars Piguet’s historical archives record both movement and case numbers, and an Extract from the Archives could potentially establish its precise production and/or sale date.
The interior case back is signed “Audemars Piguet Swiss” and bears the 18K / 0.750 gold hallmark together with the original case markings.
The watch remains fitted with its reddish-brown crocodile leather strap, displaying the attractive wear and patina expected from a vintage strap. The complete watch, including strap, measures approximately 23.5 cm / 9.25 inches in overall length.

Condition:

The watch is presented in authentic vintage condition, retaining the character developed over approximately seven decades. The original, unrestored dial shows naturally occurring peripheral patina, spotting, toning and age-related surface marks, particularly around the outer edge. These visible traces of age are an important part of the watch’s authenticity and give the dial the distinctive appearance of a genuinely preserved vintage example rather than a refinished one. The gold case displays light scratches, surface wear and minor marks consistent with careful use and age. The crocodile strap similarly exhibits wear, creasing and patina. No attempt has been made to cosmetically disguise these characteristics in the photographs. They are part of the watch’s history and contribute significantly to its vintage appearance and authenticity. This is the type of Audemars Piguet that appeals to collectors who appreciate the manufacture beyond its modern sports watches: an exceptionally thin, discreet and beautifully made Geneva dress watch from the golden age of classical Swiss watchmaking.
