Andy WARHOL for CHANEL
Rare and Complete Set of Four CHANEL N°5 Posters, 1997
An exceptional and increasingly rare complete set of four CHANEL posters N°5, published in 1997 by CHANEL in collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, New York. Presented in four striking color variations, the series brings together two of the most recognizable names of twentieth-century art and luxury: Andy Warhol and CHANEL.
This is the only complete set of four currently in our collection. We also have additional individual examples in pink and purple available separately.Only one Chanel poster available in blue/yellow.
The Chanel poster was produced in 1997 after Andy Warhol’s celebrated 1985 screenprint depicting the iconic CHANEL N°5 perfume bottle. With his characteristic transformation of commercial imagery into art, Warhol elevated the legendary bottle into a bold Pop Art composition, exploring color, repetition, glamour, and the visual language of advertising.
The original 1985 screenprint was published in an edition of 190 examples plus 30 artist’s proofs, each measuring approximately 38 x 38 inches. The edition was published by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, New York, which subsequently authorized the production of this series of offset posters for CHANEL in 1997.
Issued for an advertising campaign, the posters appeared prominently throughout France, including in public bus-stop shelters, giving the imagery an intriguing connection to Warhol’s lifelong fascination with mass communication, consumer culture, celebrity, and commercial design.
Provenance: Collected directly from bus-stop advertising shelters in France at the time of the 1997 campaign.
Today, a surviving complete set of all four colorways offers a particularly compelling intersection of Pop Art, fashion, graphic design, and the history of one of the world’s most celebrated luxury houses.
