Alexei Alexeievich HARLAMOFF is particularly celebrated for his refined portraits of women and young girls, characterized by delicate brushwork, warm tonalities and a soft, diffused treatment of light. Landscape paintings by Harlamoff are considerably rarer on the market, making this complementary pair especially interesting within his body of work.

Although the subjects differ from the portraits for which the artist is best known, the same remarkable sensitivity is immediately recognizable. The foliage, pathways, architecture and reflections are rendered through delicate and fluid brushstrokes, revealing the same softness and atmospheric quality found in Harlamoff’s celebrated depictions of female figures. Rather than recording every detail, the artist creates an impression of tranquility through subtle variations of color, light and texture.

The two compositions beautifully complement one another: one depicts a red-roofed house surrounded by lush vegetation beside a river, while the second presents a small house approached along a peaceful tree-lined path.

The original-style presentation further enhances their decorative character. Each painting is surrounded by a handsome wooden frame covered in warm-toned parchment, whose beautifully aged surface provides an elegant contrast to the rich greens and natural colors of the landscapes.

Acquired together at Drouot in Paris in 2007 by the prior collector, this rare pair offers an unusual and intimate perspective on Harlamoff’s artistic vocabulary beyond his celebrated portraiture. After their journey from Paris, these two remarkable landscapes are now proudly presented at Morateur Gallery in Los Angeles, where they begin a new chapter in their history.
