An exceptional vintage Hermès carré titled “Les Jardins d’Arménie” (The Gardens of Armenia), designed by artist Karen Petrossian circa 2005. Executed in a luxurious cashmere and silk blend, this remarkable scarf features a richly detailed multicolor composition set against a deep red background.

Inspired by Armenian culture, landscape and mythology, Les Jardins d’Arménie is among the most evocative designs created for the celebrated French Maison. Petrossian conceived an extraordinarily intricate composition reminiscent of an Oriental carpet or illuminated manuscript, populated with stylized vegetation, animals and symbolic architectural elements.

At the heart of the design is a poetic interpretation of Armenia and Mount Ararat, a mountain deeply associated with Armenian identity and the biblical story of Noah’s Ark. The composition combines luxuriant gardens, fantastic animals and abundant vegetation into an elaborate decorative landscape. In the corners, birds carrying olive branches toward rainbows evoke renewal, peace and hope.

The extraordinary density of the drawing is beautifully enhanced by the sophisticated Hermès palette. Against the rich red ground, the numerous contrasting colors reveal the remarkable precision of Petrossian’s design and give the carré the appearance of a finely woven tapestry.

Founded in Paris in 1837, Hermès has become internationally celebrated for exceptional craftsmanship and timeless French luxury. Its legendary scarves, introduced in the twentieth century, have become collectible works of textile art, bringing together accomplished artists, complex printing techniques and the finest materials.
