An exceptional Lamb by Francois Xavier Lalanne, created in France in 1997. Combining Epoxystone with bronze elements finished with a black patina, this sculpture exemplifies the artist’s celebrated exploration of the animal world and his ability to transform familiar natural forms into sophisticated sculptural objects.

The lamb and sheep occupy a particularly important place within the extraordinary artistic vocabulary developed by Francois Xavier Lalanne. Beginning in the 1960s, the artist created a distinctive universe populated by stylized animals, including sheep, rhinoceroses, birds, monkeys and other creatures. Through these works, Lalanne continuously blurred the boundaries between sculpture, decorative art and functional design.

This 1997 example demonstrates the remarkable purity and restraint that characterize Lalanne’s work. The simplified silhouette and carefully balanced proportions give the animal a serene, almost architectural presence. The contrast between the textured body and the dark patinated bronze elements further emphasizes the sculptural quality of the composition.

The work is numbered and dated and bears the “Blanchet fondeur” foundry stamp, documenting its production and association with the artist’s established body of work.

François-Xavier Lalanne, together with his wife Claude Lalanne, became internationally celebrated as Les Lalanne, creating one of the most recognizable bodies of work in twentieth-century French decorative arts. Their imaginative approach to nature, sculpture and design continues to attract major international collectors and institutions.

With its distinguished French provenance and elegant sculptural presence, this Lamb from 1997 represents a highly characteristic example of Francois Xavier LALANNE’s iconic animal sculptures.
