Maxime OLD (1910–1991)

Exceptional and Probably Unique Bronze Chandelier, France circa 1946

An exceptional and probably unique bronze chandelier by French designer Maxime Old (1910–1991), created circa 1946 and distinguished by its remarkable architecture, sophisticated use of patinated bronze and exceptional provenance within the artist’s documented production.

This Maxime OLD chandelier is composed of eight candle-base sockets and eight additional arms diffusing light through the original lampshades. The combination of two tones of brass and subtly oxidized patinated bronze creates an extraordinarily refined harmony using variations of the same material. When illuminated at night, the different bronze surfaces respond individually to the light, revealing variations of color, depth and patina that are considerably more subtle than when the chandelier is unlit.

Of particular importance is the chandelier’s exceptional rarity. We thank Olivier Old, son of Maxime Old, who kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work and conducted research within the available archives relating to his father’s production. According to Olivier Old, only one example of this chandelier has been identified to date, making it very likely that this is a unique piece and the only chandelier of this model ever produced by Maxime Old.

Its apparent uniqueness also suggests that the chandelier may have been created as a special commission for one of Maxime Old’s private clients, rather than as part of a regularly produced model.

The related matching wall sconces are documented in the principal monograph devoted to the designer and were previously in our collection. The Maxime OLD chandelier itself is not illustrated in the publication.
