Joséphine Baker, 1984

Signed J. Modigliani and dated 84 (1984).

Bearing the workshop stamp “Atelier Jeanne MODIGLIANI.”

A beautiful and particularly compelling work by Jeanne Modigliani (1918–1984), daughter of the celebrated Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920). Executed in pastel on suede in 1984, the final year of the artist’s life, this work depicts the legendary Joséphine Baker, one of the most fascinating cultural figures of twentieth-century Paris.

The choice of subject makes this pastel especially appealing and unusual within Jeanne Modigliani’s work. Baker, the American-born dancer, singer and actress who made France her home, became an icon of the Parisian avant-garde and of the extraordinary artistic energy of the 1920s and 1930s. Beyond her career as an entertainer, she was also celebrated for her involvement in the French Resistance and later for her commitment to civil rights.

Jeanne Modigliani approaches this iconic figure with remarkable sensitivity. The softness of the pastel is beautifully complemented by the unusual suede support, giving the composition warmth, texture and an intimate character. Signed and dated 1984, the work also bears the Atelier Jeanne Modigliani workshop stamp.

At Morateur Gallery, we have a particular appreciation for Joséphine Baker and the remarkable artistic world that surrounded her. Our collection includes period books relating to Baker bearing personal dedications to Paul Colin, the celebrated French illustrator and poster artist whose striking images of Baker helped define her visual identity during the 1920s.

This connection makes Jeanne Modigliani’s portrait particularly meaningful to us. Bringing together the daughter of Amedeo Modigliani and one of the great icons of Parisian cultural history, this 1984 portrait of Joséphine Baker is a beautiful and evocative testament to the enduring fascination surrounding both women.
