Jean Serrière (1893–1965) — Rare Dinanderie Copper and Silver Bowl, circa 1922–1925

Exceptional and very rare hammered copper and silver bowl on a piédouche by French artist and metalworker Jean Serrière (1893–1965), created in France circa 1922–1925, at the beginning of the Art Deco period.

This Jean Serriere bowl is entirely hand-worked in hammered copper, its subtly irregular surface retaining the individual traces of the artisan's hammer and giving the metal an extraordinary richness and depth. The warm copper tones and naturally developed patina contrast beautifully with the applied silver decoration.

At the center appears a remarkable silver figure of a reclining nude woman, treated with a stylized modernity characteristic of the 1920s. Her sculptural silhouette creates a striking focal point within the concave surface of the bowl. Additional undulating silver filaments follow the interior contours before continuing around the piédouche, or raised pedestal foot, creating an elegant wave-like rhythm throughout the composition.

This sophisticated combination of copper and silver belongs to the great French tradition of dinanderie. The term refers to the artisanal technique of creating decorative objects from sheets of metal—traditionally copper, brass, bronze, or related alloys—worked principally by hammering, raising, chasing, and patinating. During the 1920s and 1930s, dinanderie experienced an extraordinary revival in France, becoming an important expression of Art Deco decorative arts. Artists transformed relatively simple sheets of metal into highly refined sculptural objects whose beauty depended upon craftsmanship, surface, patina, and the subtle interaction of contrasting metals.

Serrière's bowl is particularly successful in combining these traditions with the emerging modern aesthetic of the period. Its organic, gently irregular outline, hammered surface and sensual silver nude create an object that functions equally as a vessel and as a work of sculpture.

The piece is stamped with the initials “J.S.” and is accompanied by an elegant custom metal stand, allowing it to be displayed vertically as an artwork.
