Philippe STARCK (b. 1949)
Rare Pair of Eurostar Premier Salon Lounge Armchairs
France, 2002
Aluminum alloy, fiberglass, steel, and camel-brown leather upholstery
The Eurostar Premier Salon Lounge armchairs rank among the rarest and most desirable examples of contemporary French design created for a major public architectural commission. Conceived in 2002 for the prestigious Eurostar Business Lounges in Paris and London, these sculptural swivel armchairs were designed exclusively by Philippe Starck and manufactured by Cassina as part of the complete redesign of the Eurostar passenger experience. Unlike commercial furniture produced for retail sale, these Philippe Starck chairs were never available to the general public, making surviving examples exceptionally scarce. Only 100 chairs were manufactured: 44 for the Eurostar Business Lounge at Gare du Nord in Paris and 56 for the Premier Salon Lounge at London's Eurostar terminal.
This exclusive commission formed part of one of Philippe Starck's most ambitious transportation and hospitality projects. Beyond designing the business lounges, Starck was entrusted with reimagining virtually every aspect of the Eurostar identity. His work included the interiors of 36 high-speed trains, passenger lounges, terminal architecture, signage, staff uniforms, tableware, lighting, and even elements of the onboard dining experience. His holistic vision transformed Eurostar into one of Europe's most refined rail services, demonstrating his belief that exceptional design should enrich every stage of a journey.
The Eurostar armchairs perfectly embody Starck's distinctive design philosophy, combining bold sculptural forms with remarkable comfort and functionality. Their enveloping silhouette, generous proportions, and elegant swivel base create a seating experience that feels simultaneously intimate, inviting, and monumental. The beautifully curved fiberglass shell is supported by a robust aluminum alloy and steel structure, while the luxurious camel-brown leather upholstery enhances both comfort and visual warmth. Every element reflects Starck's mastery of balancing engineering, ergonomics, and sculptural elegance.
Today, the Philippe Starck chairs represent far more than functional seating—they are authentic pieces of contemporary design history. Their extremely limited production, documented provenance, and direct association with one of Philippe Starck's most prestigious international commissions place them among the most collectible examples of his work. Rarely appearing on the market, they appeal equally to serious collectors of contemporary design, architects, and institutions seeking museum-quality works with impeccable provenance. Acquiring a pair offers a rare opportunity to own an iconic creation that perfectly embodies Starck's vision, where innovation, craftsmanship, luxury, and timeless design converge in a single, extraordinary work.
