André DUBREUIL (1951–2022)

Original Pair of “Soleil” Wall-Mounted Candle Holders / Sconces, France 1986–1987

An exceptional and original pair of André Dubreuil’s celebrated “Soleil” (Sun) wall-mounted candle holders, executed in patinated steel, copper and glass.

Created during an important early period in the career of André Dubreuil (1951–2022), these sculptural Andre DUBREUIL Sconces demonstrate the highly imaginative approach to metalwork that would establish the French designer as one of the most distinctive figures in late twentieth-century decorative arts.

Each Soleil is conceived as both a functional object and a wall sculpture. The radiating metal elements form an expressive sunburst composition surrounding the central candle holder, while the combination of patinated steel, copper and glass creates a sophisticated dialogue between texture, reflection and light. When illuminated by candlelight, the sculptural structure interacts with the surrounding wall, reinforcing the dramatic and almost theatrical character of the design.

This pair of Andre DUBREUIL Sconces is particularly notable for being an original pair from circa 1986–1987, dating to the period when Dubreuil was developing the vocabulary that would become immediately recognizable throughout his career. His work combines traditional craftsmanship and hand-worked metal with an unconventional sense of fantasy, drawing inspiration from historical decorative arts while remaining unmistakably contemporary.

Dubreuil’s furniture and lighting frequently blur the boundaries between sculpture, design and the decorative arts. His use of forged and patinated metal allowed him to create objects that possess both architectural strength and a remarkable sense of movement.

The Soleil model is an important expression of this artistic language, transforming the familiar sunburst motif into a highly individual sculptural object.
