Very Rare Prototype “Trévise” Low Chair, France 1984

An exceptionally rare and important prototype of the “Trévise” low chair, created by André Dubreuil (1951–2022) in 1984. This very early prototype dates from the formative period during which Dubreuil was developing the extraordinary sculptural vocabulary that would establish him as one of the most original designers of his generation.

This Andre Dubreuil Trevise chair perfectly demonstrates Dubreuil’s remarkable ability to transform iron into furniture possessing the expressive presence of sculpture. Rather than treating the metal structure simply as a functional support, Dubreuil uses it as the principal artistic element of the composition, creating an elegant dialogue between line, volume and negative space.

The most spectacular feature is undoubtedly the chair’s extraordinary sculptural apron. Formed from sweeping curves of iron beneath the seat, it introduces a remarkable sense of movement and gives the chair its unmistakable identity. The metal appears almost to have been drawn freely in space, creating a fluid architectural rhythm that contrasts beautifully with the upholstered seat above.

As a prototype dating from 1984, this particular Andre Dubreuil Trevise Chair represents an especially early stage in the development of the Trévise model. Its importance lies not only in the beauty of the finished object but also in its relationship to Dubreuil’s creative process at a pivotal moment in his career.

Throughout his work, André Dubreuil explored the expressive possibilities of metal, combining traditional craftsmanship with historical references, fantasy and an unmistakably contemporary sensibility.
