This exceptional pair of Etienne Kohlmann chairs, executed in France circa 1948, is a rare and important example of post-war French decorative arts. Combining elegant proportions with exceptional craftsmanship, the chairs feature beautifully hand-forged wrought iron frames with a rich brown patina, complemented by luxurious off-white leather upholstery. Their refined silhouette perfectly illustrates Kohlmann's ability to merge sculptural metalwork with understated sophistication.

These Etienne Kohlmann chairs are documented in Mobilier et Décoration, No. 7 (1948), where they are illustrated as part of a complete ensemble surrounding a game table. Originally, the model was conceived as a set of three armchairs accompanying the matching table, creating an intimate and highly refined gaming or conversation area. The published example was upholstered in dark brown leather, whereas the present pair has been professionally reupholstered in sumptuous off-white leather, enhancing the chairs' sculptural lines while preserving their original character and timeless elegance.

The provenance of this pair is particularly noteworthy. We were fortunate to acquire the matching game table from the same original source, as well as the matching sideboard, which has since been sold. The survival of several pieces from this important ensemble confirms the integrity of the original commission and provides a rare opportunity to appreciate Kohlmann's cohesive vision for an elegant French interior of the late 1940s.

Étienne Kohlmann remains one of the most discreet yet accomplished figures of French decorative design. His work, produced in limited numbers, is increasingly sought after by collectors who appreciate its architectural purity, exceptional ironwork, and remarkable attention to detail.
