Raoul LACHENAL (1885–1956)

Rare French Art Deco Ceramic Lamp — Pièce Unique

Signature: “Lachenal – Cochet – Pièce Unique”
Decoration: Motif by Cochet
France, 1930

An exceptional and highly decorative one-of-a-kind ceramic lamp by Raoul Lachenal, created in France in 1930 and decorated with an original figurative composition by Cochet.

The substantial ceramic body displays an elegant, generously rounded form rising toward a slender neck. Its softly crackled ivory glaze provides a luminous background for a remarkable continuous composition of female nudes, delicately rendered in warm ochre, brown, blue, rose and green tones.

The decoration unfolds around the entire circumference of this Raoul Lachenal lamp, revealing a succession of figures as the piece is viewed from different angles. Some women are seated or reclining, while others appear standing or bathing within a loosely suggested landscape of water and vegetation. The fluidity of the drawing, together with the restrained palette, gives the composition the spontaneity and intimacy of an artist’s sketch transferred directly onto ceramic.

The piece is signed “Lachenal – Cochet – Pièce Unique,” explicitly confirming both its authorship and its status as a unique work. The ceramic was created by Lachenal, while the figurative motif is by Cochet, making this an especially interesting artistic collaboration.

Raoul Lachenal (1885–1956), son of the renowned French ceramist Edmond Lachenal, established his own artistic identity while continuing the family’s important contribution to modern French ceramics. His work evolved from the legacy of Art Nouveau toward the more stylized forms and sophisticated decorative language associated with the Art Deco period.

Created in 1930, this Raoul Lachenal lamp beautifully illustrates that transition. The voluptuous ceramic form, painterly nude decoration and delicately aged crackled glaze combine to create an object that exists between functional lighting, sculpture and fine art.

Its designation as a “Pièce Unique” further distinguishes the work from serial production, making it a particularly rare and collectible example of French Art Deco ceramics and of Raoul Lachenal’s artistic production.
