Rare French Raoul LACHENAL Art Deco vase in Ceramic. Pièce Unique France, 1930

An exceptional and highly unusual one-of-a-kind ceramic vase by Raoul Lachenal, created in France in 1930 and decorated with an original figurative composition by Févola.

Of impressive scale, the vase presents an elegant elongated form with a softly rounded body tapering toward a narrow opening. The surface is covered with a delicately crackled ivory glaze, providing a subtle background for the freely drawn decoration executed in muted tones of blue, rose, ochre and brown.

The composition depicts a nude female figure riding a dolphin, a poetic and sensual subject entirely characteristic of the artistic imagination of the Art Deco period. The figure unfolds around the curved surface of the vase, allowing the decoration to change according to the viewer’s perspective. Rather than functioning simply as ornament, the drawing and ceramic form become inseparable, giving the piece the character of an individual work of art.

The vase is signed “Févola” within the decoration. The underside is inscribed “Céramique Lachenal – Pièce Unique,” confirming its status as a unique creation rather than a production model. The combination of Lachenal’s ceramic craftsmanship and Févola’s distinctive figurative decoration makes this an especially rare collaboration.

Raoul Lachenal (1885–1956), son of the celebrated French ceramist Edmond Lachenal, continued the family’s important contribution to modern French ceramics while developing his own vocabulary during the Art Deco period. His finest works combine refined forms, experimental glazes and artistic decoration, bridging the traditions of Art Nouveau and the emerging modernism of the 1920s and 1930s.

Preserved in excellent and original condition, with only minor marks and wear consistent with age and use, this remarkable Raoul Lachenal art deco vase is s pièce unique is a sophisticated example of French Art Deco ceramic art.
